Anyone who likes sport would feel very much at home
in Haverfordwest since there is activity aplenty at
excellent facilities where newcomers are made welcome.
The
rugby club is situated at the top of Merlin's Bridge
and the Blues, as they are known, play in Division
three
of the National League. They have floodlights, two pitches
and a superb clubhouse, with youth and junior players
receiving excellent coaching and lots of support from
ex-players.

Haverfordwest County play at the Bridge Meadow Stadium
in the League of Wales and they are also eager to attract
good footballers of all ages, with a football academy
for youngsters that is linked to the Haverfordwest
College. John Daniels is the Youth Development Officer
and Mickie Ellis the Director of the Football. Then
there are teams at Merlin's Bridge, Camrose, Haverfordwest
Cricket Club and others who play in the Pembrokeshire
Football League. For those of more mature years the
'Night Owls League', encourages former players and those
not quite up to league standard to take part in floodlit
Astroturf 'friendlies'.
Cricket
Haverfordwest Cricket Club have three fine pitches at
The Racecourse and field four senior teams throughout
the Summer, plus junior teams of all ages to under 18
level - with Jonathan Twigg eager to attract players
that are well coached by a strong coaching staff that
includes the likes of Ronnie Morse and Graham Morris.
Bowls/Tennis
Outdoor
bowls is played throughout the summer and there is a
great hwyl amongst the members, who are strong team
mates and friends - whilst tennis is played nearby at
the town's park - and Peter Howells is the man to gain
any information from.
In addition, short mat bowls flourishes
at Merlin's Bridge and other sites in the county town,
with Martyn Davies as keen as they come.

Sport Centre
The sport centre, situated at Sir Thomas Picton School,
is a focal point of the sporting fraternity and table
tennis, karate, badminton and aerobics go on regularly,
whilst keep fit and the new 'Spin' on fixed cycles is
growing ever-more popular. Pop in and check what is
going on in the town in terms of sport - you'd be amazed
at what is on offer!
Athletics is flourishing with Peter Freeman as one
of the coaches, whilst the Triathlon Club (for those
who like swimming, cycling and running) goes from strength
to strength. They also encourage folk to go along and
just take part in any disciplines. There is a superb
swimming club, which really looks after its youngsters,
and the local 18-hole golf course has panoramic views,
testing holes and a cordiality that is second to none.
Martial Arts are well catered for with Judo and Karate,
Tai Chi and Kick Boxing, the Red Dragon Kick Boxing
Club run by former World Champion Graham Brockway, growing
ever-more popular and held at the Merlin's Bridge Boxing
Club.
Hockey is played on the Astroturf at Sir
Thomas Picton whilst the new Dome at Tasker
Milward School provides another excellent facility
for sports like cricket (nets) and basketball - and
there are other facilities and activities too numerous
to mention in Haverfordwest - a town that really does
encourage an interest in sport from inhabitants and
visitors alike. (Bill Carne)
